Waltham, America's leading manufacturer, was attempting a return to complications. In 1859, five years after their first watches, Waltham released the "Improved Sporting Watch," or Chronodrometer, but the movement had to stop link to measure elapsed time. When the Civil War forced production reductions, the Chronodrometer was axed, with only 400 made.
